Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Rheum-Stylophorum :: Sedum

Sedum | SEE-dum | Stonecrop

Sedum is found in the arid areas in much of the northern hemisphere. The thick, succulent leaves tell us of its drought tolerance. Clearly, this is the perfect rock garden plant! Often evergreen, sedum is low maintenance, has a poor appetite, grows quickly and bugs have to be very hungry to eat it. It flowers reliably in good or bad weather.

Sandy soil, which is often found here in Maine, especially near the coast, can be a challenge to gardeners. It drains very quickly and needs frequent watering and fertilizing during the summer. Sedum prefers this soil. It is even salt tolerant, making it an ideal plant to use by the ocean.

Hummingbirds and butterflies love sedum, as the nectar is quite tasty.

With over 400 species, it is easy to find the ideal sedum for your garden.The groundcover types must be carefully sited, as they can be quite invasive. Planted in the appropriate spot, the show is brilliant.

Success with these plants comes from benign neglect, as overwatering and over-fertilizing will mean the death of them.
