Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Teucrium-Trollius :: Trillium

Trillium | TRILL-ee-um | Various Common Names

Although they appear exotic, even fragile, the ethereal native trillium are tough and resilient plants, who, when happy, will populate your springtime garden for years. Ranging in size from 12-20 inches, a trillium can be found that will serve as the centerpiece in any spring garden design.

Because the foliages of the different species often display beautiful mottling, the plant is valuable even after flowering ends. By late summer, most will have gone dormant. If they are combined with the pulmonarias, ferns (especially Japanese Painted Fern) and woodland phlox, there will be no gaps in the garden when they go dormant. Space 12 inches. Trillium will self seed so be extra careful when weeding/cultivating around them. Seedlings will take about 3-4 years to produce flowers. But - they will flower and someday you will have a sea of trillium. You may also expect some variability, as the seedlings may show minor (or even major) differences. This is one of the principal charms of the plant for us.
