Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Baptisia-Crambe :: Centaurea
Centaurea | sen-TAU-ree-ah | Bachelor's Buttons
Centaurea, commonly called Bachelor’s Buttons, is the plant to have if you want brilliant blue color in the garden during June.
It comes from a genus of approximately 450 species of perennials and annuals that can be found in diverse locations all over the world. The unique flowers, with their conspicuous bracts, stand out visually in the garden.
Caution is recommended when planning for their use, as self-seeding is common. Not that the seedlings are difficult to manage - you may easily move them to a new location, if you wish. However, be aware that this is a plant better suited to the casual, cottage-style garden than the formal one. A very handsome clump of centaurea montana can be found in the cottage garden in front of our shop at the Farm.
