Mertensia | murr-TENN-see-ah | Virginia Bluebell
Although mertensia is a genus comprised of 50 or so different species, it is our native Virginia bluebells that is best known and most grown in New England. They grow in a steadily expanding clump and produce the brilliant blue flowers in early spring. After they finish flowering (and they will be in bloom for several weeks), expect the plant to decline and ultimately, go dormant. Since this can leave a rather unsightly gap in the garden, it is a good idea to place them so other plants will manage the gap. Some gardeners use the space for summer annuals.
