Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Jeffersonia-Lychnis :: Lamiastrum
Lamiastrum | lame-ee-AS-trum | False Lamium
Lamiastrum is a close relative to lamium but has rather different growth habits. The species form is a rampant groundcover and should be planted only in those areas requiring a quickly spreading plant. We have a bed of it planted in the shade garden across the driveway.
Another relative, 'Herman's Pride', is, oddly enough, a tidy, mound-forming plant with bright silver foliage that gradually increases in diameter. No rambling tendencies whatever.
Site according to their unique habits and you will love them both. Both produce a small yellow flower but it's the foliage that puts it on center stage.

Lamiastrum galeobdolon
Silver splashed foliage.
This is an aggressive groundcover that must be sited properly. Plant it where you want a weed-suppressing spread of attractive foliage - not in a small garden, where it will take over everything!

Lamiastrum galeobdolon Herman's Pride
The small yellow flowers begin to bloom in late May. This is a eye-catching plant that may be used in the front of the border. The uniform, silver-splashed mounds complement blues quite well, we think. This is one that we grow for it's foliage.
