Calamagrostis | kal-a-ma-GROS-tis | Feather Reed Grass
Calamagrostis is a large genus (approximately 270 species) of grasses native to Eurasia. The name comes from the Greek kalamos meaning reed and agrostis meaning type of grass.
Calamagrostis include some of the most stunning specimens in the grass arboria, as the upright, arching clumps of fairly stiff leaves gives rise to elegant tall flower spikes that begin greenish, adding reddish tones as they mature. When sited so they are backlit by the sun, the effect is memorable. By autumn, the flowers mature to creamy white., Calamagrostis is a cool season grass. Cool season grasses break dormancy early in the season and bloom in June. They prefer a moist, rich soil and full sun, but is adaptable to less-than-perfect sites. Less light, however, will probably result in leaning flower stems. It is clump forming and will not spread. This is one of the grasses that should be allowed to stay in the garden to provide winter interest. Cutting it back in late spring is advised.
