Carex | CARE-ax | Sedge
Carex is an enormous genus (over 2000 species!) that is found in very diverse habitat: from alpine scree to tropical beaches. Only a few species are native to North America. Although some of the more brightly colored varieties are not hardy for us in northern New England, we have many great ones that are perfectly hardy.
Carex is considered a cool season grass. Cool season grasses break dormancy early in the season and bloom in June. Their slow spread, preference for shade and tolerance forf a variety of less-than-perfect conditions make the sedges useful in many areas of cold climate gardens. Most are evergreen. The flowers are nothing special - it is the foliage that makes this a valuable plant.
