Plainview Farm :: Ornamental Grasses :: Miscanthus :: Miscanthus
Miscanthus | miss-KAN-thus | Various Common Names
Miscanthus, a genus of approximately 20 species of warm season, deciduous grasses, is the one most people envision when the term “ornamental grass” is mentioned. Warm season grasses emerge relatively late in spring, as they wait for the soil to warm. They flower in late summer or fall. Most are native to Asia and the Japanese, especially, have used them brilliantly to create elegant landscapes. Statuesque and graceful, the clump forming miscanthus has been used by discriminating gardeners for many years to create dramatic, yet, very tough, designs. Recently, since the ‘80’s, many people have become fascinated and grass has become one of the trendiest of plants.
They prefer full sun and a fertile, well-drained soil. Because of the brief growing season in northern New England, miscanthus does not produce ripe seed and thus, is not invasive. During winter, the dried leaves and flowers are retained by the plant to remain a dramatic presence in the landscape. Cutting it back in late spring is advised.
Through the season, you will see the many different grasses displayed in the various gardens here at the Farm. It is fascinating to watch their development through the season. The big miscanthus, panicum and pennisetum are left to frost beautifully through the winter. They were the only good thing that the Ice Storm brought!
