Plainview Farm :: Ornamental Grasses :: Pennisetum :: Pennisetum
Pennisetum | penn-a-SEE-tum | Fountain Grass
Pennisetum, a genus of 120 species, is found in every and all parts of the world. The name comes from the Latin, penna, meaning leather and seta, meaning bristle. This refers to the unusual bottle-brush form of the flowers which appear in mid summer, rising dramatically above the soft mounded foliage. A warm season grass, pennisetum expands slowly to create a splendid specimen in the garden or on its own. Warm season grasses emerge relatively late in spring, as they wait for the soil to warm. They flower in late summer or fall. They a prefer a well-drained, fertile soil and full sun. In northern climates, fountain grass is not invasive. The prevailing fall foliage, matured to buff, persists adding winter interest to the resume. Cutting it back in late spring is advised.
Through the season, you will see the many different grasses displayed in the various gardens here at the Farm. It is fascinating to watch their development through the season. The big miscanthus and pennisetum are left to frost beautifully through the winter. They were the only good thing that the Ice Storm produced.
