Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Echinacea-Gypsophila :: Epimedium
Epimedium | ep-a-MEED-ee-um | Barrenwort
We always liked epimedium for the quiet strength it presented in the shade garden—the flowers
are elegant and the foliage always adds interesting texture to the scene. Two years ago, we were
researching an article on fall gardens and carefully observed them well into December. The
glowing bronze-leaved epimedium took top honors for long-lasting, durable fall foliage. A few
early storms passed through, as well. No matter. We enjoyed it until it was buried in snow.
Some people have reported that it was evergreen for them in a mild winter. Coastal gardeners
might take notice. This is an easy, reliable plant that will even thrive in very dry shade. No easy
feat, that. In spring, a pair of scissors will make quick work of the winter-damaged foliage and
permit the bright spring leaves to emerge.
Expect it to take 2-3 years to reach mature size (24"in diameter). This is one of the few perennials
that can truly be considered low-maintenance.
