Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Hedera-Iris :: Helleborus
Helleborus | HELL-a-bore-us | Hellebore
It was 1997 when we first encountered serious hellebores on a trip to West Virginia, no less, home to Sunshine Farm, an uncommon nursery located high in the Appalachians. In late February, we were awestruck to see fields filled with blooming plants in all imaginable colors. The breeding that was going on there has resulted in the 'Sunshine Strain,' a collection of plants bred there.
This exotic flower, once known only to those in the know, has now achieved high status, as it has been named the Perennial of the Year for 2005. And with very good reason. Hellebores are absolutely the first
flower to bloom here at the Farm. Because they bloom when it is still fairly cold, the flowers remain, fresh and enthusiastic, for many weeks—actually, until it really warms up in May. In your garden, if you allow them to self-seed, you may expect young plants, as well. And, who knows, perhaps a unique hybrid will be found by you!
Allow the foliage to remain year round although an early spring trim with scissors may well be in order. Shelter from harsh winter winds will help protect the foliage. They prefer a sweet soil, so their performance will be compromised if planted in the garden adjacent to acid-loving plants. They don’t care to be waterlogged which means planting away from sprinklers!
Hellebores are deer-resistant. Space 12 inches.
