Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Delosperma-Dracocephalum :: Dendranthemum
Dendranthemum | den-DRANN-tha-mum | Hardy Mum
Fall flowering and colorful, the genus dendranthemum is a large and complex one. So much hybridizing has been done (principally in China and Japan), that the genealogy of the group is hopelessly tangled. No matter.
These plants contribute to outstanding gardens for the New England region. The warm weather and shortening days of autumn signal the plant to begin flowering. Since they bloom so late, it is possible - make that "advisable" - to pinch back the stems to 6" in late June or early July. This will not interfere with setting of buds but will maintain a tidy, multi-stemmed bush that will not require support. This is a plant that responds poorly to overly rich diet. Don't kill it with fertilizer.
