Amsonia | am-SONE-ee-a | Blue Star Flower
The specimen-sized amsonia planted in front of our garden center adds a exceptional dimension to that garden from spring through the fall. This native can truthfully be called a low-maintenance plant and its common name tells us what we can expect in late June when it begins flowering. But don’t forget that the willow-like foliage performs as a comely background, as it will grow to 36-48 inches in diameter, for others that bloom later. Dwarf purple or blue asters are logical accomplices, for example, as amsonia foliage turns to yellow in fall. The combination is terrific! This is an excellent architectural perennial, happily holding its own with shrubs.
Hubrectii is known for very fine foliage, almost fern-like in texture, offering alluring contrast for designers to exploit.
