Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Hedera-Iris :: Hedera
Hedera | HEAD-ur-ah | Ivy
In Cambridge and Portland, ancient brick can be seen as the perfect background for English ivy. The effect is classic, pure New England.
Gardeners in zone 5 need to be careful with English ivy (the so-called English ivy is actually parthenocissus - not hedera at all) , as it seems to be at the far end of it's tolerance for harsh winter weather. North and west of Portland, you will have much more success with Baltic ivy. This species is the most reliably hardy in zone 5. It has been growing happily here at the Farm for many years.
All ivy prefer a cool environment - water moderately in summer and in winter, sparingly - feed lightly.
