Asclepias | as-KLEE-pee-as | Various Common Names
The butterflies flutter and bees swarm blissfully for the long days that asclepias blooms beginning in late July. It comes from a large genus, including over 100 species, and is found native in North Africa, North and South America.
Gardeners have become more aware of these beautiful plants and continue to plant more and more each season—in meadows as well as in flower borders. The colors are fabulous and with the species tuberosa, the colors will even vary from orange to yellow to red, as these are seed-produced plants.
While most of this genus prefer a well-drained soil, the species incarnata prefers more moisture. It is even called “Swamp Milkweed”. Be thoughtful when locating the plants, as they resent being moved. Space 30 inches.
Note: these can be tardy to awaken in spring. Be careful with the cultivator.
