Eupatorium | yew-pa-TOE-ree-um | Joe Pye Weed
This is a genus of 40 species that are found in many habitats around the world. People are
always surprised when they learn that the majestic plants in our gardens, flaunting basketball-sized
flower heads for many weeks in late summer, are no less than Joe Pye Weed (aka Boneset),
long minimized for its “wild flower” role, but hardly ever valued for its ornamental splendor
in the large garden. For, make no mistake, these are very large plants and require ample room
(space 36 inches) to look their best. To shorten them a bit, cut back the stems 12 inches in June. It may delay
flowering a bit, and it will also encourage branching. In Europe, they are widely used and serve
to extend the summer garden season deep into the fall.
Americans could learn from them.
