Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Echinacea-Gypsophila :: Eryngium
Eryngium | ah-RING-ee-um | Sea Holly
Sea Holly thrives in dry, rocky sites and is quite well-suited to our coastal gardens. They should
be of much greater interest to Maine gardeners, as they are very salt-tolerant and love the bony
soil. Plus, our cool nights bring out their blues brilliantly as with echinops. And, yet, gardeners seem unaware of them. We would like to see that change.
Because they have
long taproots, drought does not bother them.The elegant, silver-toned foliage adds both unusual
texture and cool color to the border. Some minimal reseeding may occur. Provide 24" between them and expect an evergreen rosette to remain in fall. Flowering begins in late July.
