Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Echinacea-Gypsophila :: Filipendula
Filipendula | fill-a-PEN-dew-lah | Meadowsweet
They look especially beautiful growing near water and that condition makes them very happy,
too. With the exception of vulgaris, the meadowsweets are usually thirsty. Most prefer to grow
in mostly shady conditions, too. At the nursery, we planted purpurea in fairly dense shade
where it has happily performed and commanded its due attention every year. In late June, the
flowering begins for all of them, preceding the astilbe by a few weeks. The flowers are, in fact,
similar to astilbe, but filipendula is a much larger plant and more statuesque. We like to combine
it with kirengeshoma or rodgersia for an outstanding foliage effect that persists all season.
And be sure to cut a few of the flowers for your indoor pleasure. These are robust plants, growing
to 36 inches in diameter (except for the dwarf ‘Kokome’). Give them the space they need.
