Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Echinacea-Gypsophila :: Gaillardia
Gaillardia | gay-LARD-ee-ah | Blanketflower
Few trends have hit the horticultural world with as much impact as the hot colors that have
become so popular in the last several seasons. Bright oranges, sulphur yellows and fire engine
reds, colors no one used a few years ago, are now, pardon the pun, very hot. Combinations
of these searing shades have taken center stage! And no perennial takes greater advantage of
the spectrum than gaillardia. These incandescent, daisy-type flowers bloom, bloom and then
bloom some more. The only human intervention needed is the cutting tool, as deadheading is
necessary. Deadhead prematurely and you have cut flowers for the vase. Not a bad tradeoff.
Don’t kill these plants with kindness—they like hot, dry, desert-like conditions and a lean
diet. Give them this and they’ll reward you quite nicely. Space 12-18 inches.
