Geranium | jer-AY-nee-um | Cranesbill

Without doubt, there is a proper geranium for near every garden—all except those planted in deep, dense shade, we think. And, in truth, we really haven’t tried that — yet.

Geranium is a most versatile and satisfying perennial. It will never stop you in your tracks as will lilies or delphinium or peonies—but long past the glory days of June, geranium will occupy a honored place in your garden, as it serves up flowers, often fragrance and superior foliage throughout the season…indeed, throughout the year, as many are evergreen. This is a very tough, reliable and relatively easy plant to grow well. Bugs and diseases ignore geraniums.

Some commonsense guides to placement: a groundcover-type needs space to roam, a rockery- type needs well-drained, sandy soil and so on. Most of the taller ones benefit greatly from being cut back hard after flowering finishes. Often, blooms reappear to thank you.

Geranium is an enormous genus, made complex by the habit of interbreeding as they are wont to do. Advisory: don’t worry about the name of the species. Find a foliage and flower that you like, site it properly and enjoy!
