Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Hedera-Iris :: Heuchera
Heuchera | HUGH-kur-ah | Coralbells
Gardeners remain enthralled by the magic that is the world of heuchera. Since the mid-1990s,
when fantastic varieties began to show up in the market, the interest in them has never waned,
but only increased. We have used them in sun and shade, in formal perennial borders and in
casual woodland glades. Amazingly, the accommodating coralbells fits in wherever we plant it.
With the ornamental foliages, flowers are usually of limited interest. With green-leaved varieties,
the flowers take a dominant place in the garden as they are produced generously for a long time.
The memorable color patterns of the foliages stimulate the creation of brilliant garden mosaics.
This is a great opportunity for those of you fascinated by differing foliages and textures.
Although they will do just fine in full sun, we think the colors are better in filtered light.
They thrive in New England, as they like to be cool. A winter mulch will be helpful, as they
sometimes are heaved by frost. Evergreen boughs are best, as they allow the evergreen leaves
to breathe more easily. If heaving does occur, you may reset them gently into the soil in early
spring. Heucheras have a habit of growing out of the soil; regular resetting of the plant is beneficial.
