Plainview Farm :: Perennials :: Jeffersonia-Lychnis :: Liatris
Liatris | lee-AH-triss | Blazing Star or Gayfeather
Blazing Star is as American as maize. It is found on the prairies and in open woodlands and
like many natives, it was,for many years, under-appreciated by American gardeners. Not until Dutch cut flower
growers sent liatris to America as part of bouquets, did American gardeners recognize the potential
in this “Dutch” flower. We needed Europeans to alert us to its possibilities as an ornamental
perennial. Well, succeed they did.
Now liatris is a mainstay of many gardens, adding a longblooming
(starting in late July) spike flower that helps create the framework of the American
perennial border. In our garden, l. aspera blooms well into October, a tall graceful wand in the
breeze. This is a particular favorite of Steve’s.
The flowers open from the top down — a curiosity of interest to people and butterflies. The
soft colors combine very nicely with the richer colors usually found in the August garden,
especially echinacea, rudbeckia and phlox. Give it some space, as it will spread to 36 inches or more.
Please inquire for other speces and varieties which may be available in small quantities here at the Farm.
