Ligularia | lig-yew-LAH-ree-ah | No Common Name
So long as gardeners bow to the reality that 'The Rocket' usually wilts on hot summer afternoons,
this plant should be planted in all gardens, as it is statuesque and elegant. If the temporary wilting of foliage is too
discordant for your garden, it is probably best for your nervous system to find another plant for
the site. The bright yellow spires take center stage in August. And all ligularias have great, bold
foliage that create interest in the garden all season long. The fall-blooming ‘Othello’ produces
dark green leaves tinged with smoke and waits until September to flower. Sheltering ligularia
from the blazing afternoon sun will help deal with the wilt problem, but proper soil preparation
is key. Remember, compost retains moisture very effectively. And don’t forget, these plants
love our cool summers. Expect spread to 30 inches. For those with smaller gardens, the Dutch have developed a new ligularia that is only 20’ tall. ‘Little Lantern’ offers the same brightly colored yellow spikes - only shorter.
