Nepeta | NEP-uh-tuh | Catmint
Catmint is the consummate ensemble actor, using its foliage and elegant color to help weave
together other players to create the drama that is the garden. The gray-green foliage looks good
all season long and is the perfect foil for brightly-colored peonies or iris. Its purple and deep
blue flowers bloom for many weeks, in various locations. (Clue: they are quite shade tolerant.)
This speaks to the versatility of the plant for garden designers who are seeking a fresh look.
Clouds of smoky color and demure gray-green foliage brings an elusive sophistication to the
garden. Space 18 inches. The fragrance is an added seduction. Bees are helpless.
Nepeta love our cool Maine summers, as heat and humidity cause them distress. Note: in
May, cut back the taller varieties by 6-12 inches to maintain a more compact, less sprawled habit. Prune all varieties after their first heavy bloom and
deadhead regularly thereafter to prolong flowering—which can last nearly into fall. A little
maintenance will go a long way with these plants.
