Monarda | moe-NAR-dah | Beebalm

Gardeners enjoy the sweetly fragrant monarda from midsummer well into fall. With its vivid colors and majestic size, beebalm commands our attention. It is a versatile, easy-to-grow native that will spread quickly. Older varieties have been plagued with fungal diseases and this was discouraging to gardeners, especially those in areas where humidity was an issue. We offer new varieties that are fairly resistant. If you really want to be careful, use a preventive fungicide before it is needed.

Designers use monarda as part of a meadow or border design. Since it spreads, thinning the clump (expect 36" spread) is a usually good idea—unless of course, you want it to fill a space with color and fragrance! We pinch back the tallest varieties to 12" in June, which delays blooming a bit but prevents damage in the event of a thunderstorm. The aromatic foliage and jewel colors of monarda will lure visitors—we guarantee it. Said visitors will likely include bees and hummingbirds, who love these great plants, too.
