In 2007, a client in Boothbay asked us to help improve the landscaping of their summer home. This home, overlooking the water, was the scene of much summer entertaining. They wanted it to be the best it could be.

Over the years, the plants surrounding the home had taken a beating from the harsh winds blowing in off the ocean. Those old, overgrown shrubs had been poorly pruned, as well and were unhealthy. We decided that none could be salvaged. When we reviewed the site with the client, we saw that the pool area needed the same renovation.

Their goals for the property included:
1. Add seasonal color (early June until early September)
2. Cover an unsightly wellhead
3. Improve privacy

The new design we created offered a new perspective. We had a clear space with which to work and could use plants suited to the location. Our clients were able to enjoy it immediately, as we augmented the outstanding new perennial garden with annuals including big dahlias (selected by the client here at the garden center). This actually evolved to be a cutting garden. They had the color they wanted from the first day!

We also constructed a berm near the property line to help block the view to the neighboring property for added privacy. When large native spruce were installed in the berm, the property was shielded.

And these great native plants looked right at home.

The wellhead? We found a gorgeous 20” hollow stone frog that creatively covered it. We had to wait a few weeks for it to be cast, but when it arrived, everyone loved it.
