In 2007, we were asked to design a new landscape for a property in Cundys Harbor.

Goals for the property included:

1. To build an enclosed shade structure somewhere in the lawn with a naturalistic planting scheme. They also wanted a fence to provide privacy to the hot tub area. They also included a walkway to the deck. They wanted gardens to view from the deck and a lawn that they could maintain.

2. Create a vegetable garden space near to the house. Working closely with the clients, we designed the garden they had envisioned for the hot tub area. We excluded plants loved by bees. We were also able to design a garden with the privacy they wanted without the expense of building a shade structure.

There were some grade adjustments that were needed for the lawn, but otherwise, we relied on site conditions to determine optimum plant selections. After we discussed various plant choices, the clients provided us their preferred plant list. Additionally, we decided to visually "split" the yard.

By splitting the backyard into two areas, we were able to create a secluded vegetable garden apart from the ornamental gardens and the lawn.

By the way, the client was delighted that no expensive structure was needed. They increased the use of their deck and the hot tub was now integrated into the landscape.

It afforded them the privacy they required. The outcome of the project exceeded the expectations of the clients.

By asking people what they want and then providing it, we have learned that it is easy to make most people happy. Sometimes, the site makes wishes impossible to grant. But our responsibility is to teach clients why certain plants may not work in certain situations. This honesty helps build strong relationships that we value for years to come - long after the current
project is complete.

We think this was accomplished with this project!
