In 2008, we were invited to participate in the Children's Garden exhibit at the Coastal Maine Botanic Garden. DeWan and Associates of Yarmouth asked us to work with them on this exhibit. Eight other companies created mini gardens for this large exhibit.
Sarah Marshall and Keith Smith had designed the garden to bring the earth and sky together. They imagined that it could be experienced through a canopy of leaves dancing above the heads of the children passing through. A path meandered around the trees and plants and sometimes, it even led to a peek hole created inside the walled garden for curious eyes to investigate. The interior of the garden reflected soft, cool greens and warm yellows. The blue garden walls with lovely painted clouds, was the backdrop for a collection of reds, oranges and yellows.
We thought that certain plants were more fun than others, so we planted morning glories that climbed trellises. We planted many fragrant plants. Kong Coleus with fantastically, ginormous leaves made a loud statement!
Color, color, color!
We installed the garden in June and it stayed in place until August. The horticulture staff at CMBG get credit for taking good care of it for us. All summer long, visitors - young and not-so-young - enjoyed the whimsical gardens installed there.
